The Nā Pali Coast runs for 17 miles along Kauaʻi’s north shore and is one of the most dramatic and culturally significant landscapes in Hawaiʻi. Towering cliffs rise up to 4,000 feet, shaped by volcanic forces and centuries of wind and water. Native Hawaiian ʻohana lived in these valleys for nearly a thousand years, cultivating kalo in loʻi and fishing the reefs that lined the shore. Each valley was part of an ahupuaʻa, a land division stretching from mountain to sea that provided everything needed for daily life. By the 1930s the last families had moved away, yet cultural sites and spiritual connections remain. Today the coastline is preserved as Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park and can only be reached by foot on the Kalalau Trail, by boat, or from the air.
