Chicana politician Adelita Grijalva just made history after winning the special election for the Arizona congressional seat held by her late father Raúl Grijalva on Tuesday, September 23, becoming the state’s first-ever Latina congresswoman. The 54-year-old democrat and Tucson native will represent Arizona’s 7th Congressional District and fill one of the three vacancies in the House, narrowing the GOP majority to 219-214. In a speech following her win, Grijalva honored her late father and thanked her community for their support: “My dad started a movement; unions, environmentalists, reproductive, LGBTQIA, and immigrant activists, immigrant rights activists, all united behind a common goal rooted in justice, dignity, and equity for all.
