On World Rivers Day, we are reflecting on how our waterways create connection and require stewardship.
𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯:
Selxwí:chel means the middle of three and refers to Abbotsford. Spoken in Halq’eméylem, (the Upriver dialect of the Halkomelem language), this form of Coast Salish language embodies the Stó:lō worldview and culture, particularly their deep connection to the Fraser River. As we date back to time immemorial., we embrace this identity and are grateful to be in the middle of Máthekwi (Matsqui), Semá:th (Sumas) and Nuxwsá7aq (Nooksack), with the Fraser River designated as our connector and natural highway.
Although a work in progress, the Experience the Fraser initiative will be further connecting communities from Hope to the Salish Sea, showcasing why the Fraser River is one of the greatest river destinations in the world.
