An immeasurable loss for the sport, the industry, the breed…it was announced Tuesday by Coolmore Australia that superstar sire Wootton Bassett has died in Australia at the age of 17. The stallion suffered a bout of choke, a condition in which a food blockage occurs in the oesophagus, which can lead to inflammation and other complications. Sadly, Wootton Bassett subsequently developed acute pneumonia which deteriorated rapidly. Despite round-the-clock care from a dedicated team of vets, he was unable to be saved. The 17-year-old son of Iffraaj has 25 Stakes winners and six Group 1 winners from his current two and three-year-old crops conceived in Ireland, highlighted by multiple Group 1-winning sons Camille Pissarro and Henri Matisse, and this season’s multiple G1-winning filly Whirl.
