For the past 3 years, I’ve made the September trip to NYC to celebrate Taylor’s birthday just the two of us. Walks through the city, coffee, shopping, late nights. Those “fun short spurts” only this city gives.
But for her 21st birthday, plans changed. My 12-year-old Syd decided last minute he wanted to come too. I told him: “this trip is about your sister. If you join, you’ve gotta go with the flow.”He promised he would.
And he did. Mostly. There were sore feet, a few tears, moments of “just one more hour, babe.” Taylor laughed, rolled her eyes, reminded him it was her day. And somehow, in between, I watched their relationship shift. He’s still and she’s an adult now but there this shared world: inside jokes, sibling banter that only makes sense to them and making fun of mom.
These moments that broke and filled my heart all at once. When they clashed and both looked to me to fix it. When they clicked and I saw the love between them shine through. This trip held everything: laughter...
