Francis Newton Souza — bold, original, and unafraid to confront the world around him. From the unsettling portrait of Emperor (1957) to the restless cityscape of Houses in Hampstead (1962), this video explores how Souza captured postwar Britain with uncompromising vision. His paintings reveal the tensions of authority, identity, and change, turning paint into protest. Arriving in London in 1949 with little money but fierce determination, Souza forged a new path in modern art — stripping away convention and remaking the city and its rulers on canvas. These alongside stellar works by Maqbool Fida Husain, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Sayed Haider Raza, Jagdish Swaminathan, Zarina, Zainul Abedin, George Keyt, and Ganesh Pyne, amongst others, are highlights from the Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art auction taking place at Sotheby's London on 30 September.
