Four years ago, construction workers in northern France unearthed the remains of more than 100 people. A specialist unit in the UK known as the war detectives got involved and after an investigation they solved the 100-year-old mystery of two missing Scottish soldiers. Archaeologists knew that the site in Lens where the bodies were found was the scene of the Battle of Loos, one of biggest in World War One. They also found shoulder badges that indicated the soldiers had fought for two Scottish regiments - the Gordon Highlanders and the Cameron Highlanders. They first identified the body of Gordon McPherson, a 23-year-old Lance Corporal, who - according to war diaries - had been killed on the first day of the battle. The name of the second soldier was more difficult to establish, but he has now been identified as James Grant Allan, a 20-year-old lieutenant.
