The Columns are one of the most memorable symbols of Mizzou from history, traditions and student life. Although now an iconic structure of Mizzou, the Columns weren’t always just the Columns.
On Jan. 9, 1892, tragedy struck the university when a chandelier in Academic Hall fell off the ceiling, causing a massive fire. By the end of the night, the entire building was gone — except the columns.
The Board of Curators wanted to tear the Columns down, thinking they blocked the view of other buildings. But several Columbia residents and Mizzou alumni fought to keep the Columns standing.
