On Saturdays, members of UC Berkeley’s Habitat for Humanity chapter trade a typical college student’s slow morning for an 8 a.m. wake-up and a BART ride to a construction site, where they spend the day building housing. Every weekend, Cal Habitat for Humanity, or Cal Habitat, coordinates volunteer projects and services for the local community through its various committees, ranging from soup kitchens and construction projects to research, fundraising, education and more. The group operates primarily in the East Bay, but will go anywhere accessible by BART or bus, according to Build Committee Coordinator Leslie-Cheyeanne Kennedy-De Jesus. Cal Habitat is a campus chapter of the larger international organization Habitat for Humanity.
