Horace Cross is a queer black teenager in rural America, part of a fundamentalist Baptist family, and, in the process of trying to turn himself into a bird, accidentally summons and is possessed by a demon instead. Randall Kenan was a lifelong fan of science fiction and fantasy but his fiction leant more towards the speculative and the supernatural, and intersected with the portrayal of Black lives in the South, often utilising elements of folklore, fantasy and biblical allusion to explore themes of alienation, race, sexuality and religion.
