1 year ago today, after a weeks worth of rainfall and saturation, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. Catastrophic flooding, landslides, sinkholes, etc. wrecked Boone and its surrounding areas. Tens of thousands of homes were destroyed, thousands of miles of roads and bridges were destroyed, and over 100 people unfortunately passed away from this storm. The resilience of Boone showed up after the storm however! Numerous amounts of people volunteered to help, as well as the Red Cross and App State opening up their dining hall to everybody. After nearly three weeks of rebuilding and cleaning up, App State students returned to class. Still today, we are still rebuilding in the more remote areas. Looking back at this storm, we remember the devastation it left us, but we also remember how resilient and kind Boone and its surrounding areas were during this time. #MountainStrong
