The Shelby GT500’s cobra badge has one of the most iconic backstories in American muscle car history.
Carroll Shelby first used the cobra name in the early 1960s for his AC Cobra, a British chassis paired with a Ford V8 to rival Ferrari.
Shelby claimed the word “Cobra” came to him in a dream, and the snake’s aggressive imagery perfectly fit the car’s deadly performance.
When Ford partnered with Shelby to create the GT350 in 1965 and the GT500 in 1967, the cobra badge carried over as Shelby’s personal stamp.
Over time, the coiled snake became the universal symbol of Shelby performance and later inspired Ford’s SVT Cobra Mustangs in the 1990s.
Today, the cobra badge on the GT500 is both a tribute to Shelby’s racing legacy and a mark of Ford’s most extreme Mustang performance.
