For generations, the Waorani people of the Ecuadorian Amazon have defended their ancestral territory from oil extraction. This year, they won a historic legal victory: a provincial court ruled that the government violated their right to free, prior, and informed consent when it tried to auction off their land to oil companies. As a result, over half a million acres of pristine rainforest are now protected from drilling. Why is this a feminist win? Extractive industries disproportionately harm Indigenous women, who face heightened risks of violence, health impacts, and cultural loss when their lands are invaded. By protecting Waorani territory, the court also protects women’s bodies, knowledge, and leadership, affirming that climate justice and gender justice are inseparable. The Ecuadorian government has already announced it will appeal.
