Jane Goodall, the British scientist known for her pioneering research on chimpanzees and later her environmental activism, died Wednesday at age 91, the Jane Goodall Institute said.⁣ ⁣ Goodall rose to prominence in the 1960s through her fieldwork in Tanzania, where she documented chimpanzees using tools and displaying individual personalities—findings that challenged long-standing scientific assumptions. She also brought her work to the public through a partnership with the National Geographic Society.⁣ ⁣ Her career later shifted from research to advocacy, as she warned of habitat destruction and climate change and urged governments and communities to act.⁣ ⁣ Goodall’s work opened the field to other women primatologists, including Dian Fossey.
