Jane Goodall has passed away, but her spirit will forever live on in the forests she restored, in the animals she saved, and in the young people she always believed were the hope for our future. One of the most powerful moments of her legacy is the story of Wounda. Rescued by the Jane Goodall Institute in 2004 from the illegal pet trade, Wounda was so weak and emaciated her name meant “close to death.” Thanks to extraordinary care at the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre, including Africa’s first chimp-to-chimp blood transfusion, she survived. In 2013, when she was released onto the sanctuary island of Tchindzoulou, she paused, turned, and embraced Jane — a gesture that moved the world. Wounda went on to become Alpha female and later gave birth to her daughter, Hope. That embrace lives on as a symbol of everything Jane stood for: compassion, resilience, and the belief that with care, life can begin again.
