In 1973, Porsche improved from the 917/10 with a flat-twelve 5.4L twin turbocharged engine in the 917/30 Spyder. The first cars, chassis 002 and 003, were made for Roger Penske’s team. These low-flying objects produced 1,500 hp in full-boost qualifying trim, placing them among the most powerful Porsches ever made. Driven by Mark Donohue, the 917/30 easily swept the 1973 Can-Am Championship. Per the obvious, governing bodies soon decided to reign in the monster, yet the legend lives on.
