TRASH BUSTERS The teachers for the AP Environmental science course here at McCallum, Antonette Matthews and Elaine Bohls Graham, had asked students to collect the trash/compost they use within a 48 hour time period. The goal is to show how much trash and compost students accumulate over a short span of time. Junior Lauren Brewer, a student in Matthew's 6 period AP Environment science class has discovered that there is a huge amount of waste collected between her class alone.
“We're sorting trash and dumping out all of the trash that we collected over the span of a week,” said Brewer. “Yeah, it really gives us like a visual representation of the types of trash that we're producing which seems like way to much”
As the students sorted the trash into piles and found the largest amounts of waste were Non-biodegradable. Another student in that class, Mary Turner, finds the amount of plastic worrisome and alarming.
