Some owners of older Pixel phones are reporting that a new SOS Satellite feature has appeared in their Settings menu. š²š”
However, the feature is non-functional. A Google spokesperson confirmed to 9to5Google that its appearance on the Pixel 8 and older devices is a bug and that the option will be removed automatically.
The Pixel Satellite SOS feature is exclusive to the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series, including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It's not on the more affordable Pixel 9a.
Older Pixels lack the Samsung Exynos 5400 modem, which enables the feature on modern Pixel phones. The Exynos 5300 inside the Pixel 8 series is technically capable of the feature, but Google limited its functionality at launch.
All devices capable of Pixel SOS are able to use the service for free for two years after the phone is activated. Google hasn't said what happens when those two years are up.
