David Bowie’s ‘Aladdin Sane’ cover – arguably one of the most recognisable images in pop history – is heading to auction and poised to become the most expensive album artwork ever sold. Chris Duffy, son of the artwork’s photographer Brian Duffy, recently told The Mirror about the unlikely inspiration behind the now iconic lightning bolt: “My dad was given a rice cooler one time by his mum. It was made by National Panasonic and the pot had a blue and red flash on it. I remember dad showed that to David one day and he said ‘Yeah… fantastic.’” The original print is estimated at £250,000 to £300,000 when it goes under the hammer at Bonhams in London between 22 October and 5 November as part of a 35-item “Duffy Archive” sale. If realised, it would surpass the current record held by the original artwork for Led Zeppelin’s self-titled debut album, which fetched $325,000 (£240,000–£250,000 approx.) in 2020.
