It’s crazy to think the scenes we saw at the Final have played out more than a hundred times before. First in roped-off fields without any stands, then in rustic stadiums made out of wood, and now, in gleaming 21st-century venues like Q2 in Austin. It makes you wonder how this Open Cup Final will be remembered a hundred years from now. Will people remember the thunderous chants and Latin-infused beats cascading from the crowd? Will they recall VAR technology (something impossible to envision at the first Final in 1914) reviewing over a couple of penalties? Or will it be those shots of Nashville SC players capturing the first major trophy in Tennessee sports history? We can’t know. But there’s a strange comfort in knowing that—in victory and defeat—all of us present got to become part of that everlasting Open Cup thread that ties us back to our soccer forefathers.
