When you’re a communicator or public speaker, clarity is everything. Using simple, accessible language isn’t optional — it’s an act of service. One of my favourite examples of this comes from Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO. Almost every episode, Steven pauses to ask his guests to define a word or phrase they’ve just used. Even when he clearly knows what it means, he asks anyway — not for himself, but for us, the listeners. That’s what service-oriented leadership looks like. It’s saying: “Let’s make sure everyone can join the conversation.” Steven once shared that after a young man in prison told him he stopped listening because guests used “fancy words,” he made it his mission to simplify and clarify. From that moment on, he chose inclusion over ego — and that’s a powerful reminder for all of us who speak or write to others.
