When my dad told me he had cancer, I had an impression that he was not going to make it and to spend as much time with him as possible. I didn’t know what to think. When he died, I was angry. I was upset. I was upset that all my friends still had their dads and I didn’t. But the night he passed, I was lying in my bed and I envisioned my dad when he was healthy. And I realized that this had happened for a reason.
He was asked to be the bishop a couple weeks before he found out that he had cancer, so the entire time he was sick, he was serving others. I think that helped him focus on doing what Jesus would do. I’ve carried that with me. He would always say, “You don’t know what people are going through,” so I try to show empathy and compassion to everyone. By serving others, I felt God’s love, and I was comforted.
