Believe it or not, the McLaren F1 that conquered Le Mans was never meant to race. When Gordon Murray started work on the McLaren F1 around 1989, he warned that he was creating a pure road car, one that would be forever compromised for motorsport. Of course, millionaire buyers were soon lobbying for a race version.
McLaren boss Ron Dennis approved the creation of the F1 GTR on a minimal budget. Japanese businessman Motokazu Sayama was unable to land a deal to sponsor any of the vehicles, but McLaren converted the prototype car into another racer, and that car went on to win Le Mans.
