When Gordon Murray started work on the McLaren F1 around 1989, he warned that he was creating a pure road car, one that would be forever compromised for motorsport. Of course, millionaire buyers were soon lobbying for a race version.   McLaren boss Ron Dennis approved the creation of the F1 GTR on a minimal budget.
