Today, Guatemala is a step closer to freeing Jose Rubén Zamora. The Clooney Foundation for Justice has been monitoring the case of Guatemalan journalist Jose Rubén Zamora since November 2022 and just honored him at #TheAlbies last week, where his son accepted the award on his behalf. He is a tireless, brave and brilliant investigative journalist taking on corruption in Guatemala. Jose has been imprisoned for years because of his pursuit of the truth, but yesterday the Supreme Court of Guatemala recognized his right to a legal defense was violated, offering the judiciary an opportunity to do the right thing. The judgment stands as a reminder that journalists doing their job can never be a crime. That the search for truth must always be defended.
