In February 2024, specialolympicsnj athlete Colleen Ciecura began experiencing various eye discomfort such as itching, dryness, and blurry vision that would eventually lead to double vision. 👁️ For months, Colleen went from appointment to appointment, hoping for answers, but most visits left her with none. This all changed when Colleen visited Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Foundation Opening Eyes®, the vision care discipline of Special Olympics Healthy Athletes®. Here, Colleen was referred to a local neuro-ophthalmologist. After all the overview testing, she finally received a diagnosis: ocular myasthenia gravis—a rare autoimmune disease that weakens muscles, especially those controlling the eyes and eyelids. 🌎 This #WorldSightDay, we’re sharing Colleen’s journey to diagnosis.
