Hayley Williams said the lyricism she’s most proud of from her latest album is the second pre-chorus of "True Believer," as discussed in an interview with The New York Times Popcast. The lyrics draw on two distinct references: Billie Holiday’s "Strange Fruit," a protest song that confronts the l*nching of Black Americans, and Hard Bargain, a historic neighborhood in Franklin, Tennessee, located near where Williams grew up. Hard Bargain was established when Harvey McLemore, a formerly enslaved man, purchased land from his enslaver and later divided it up so other freed people could own property. The result was a Black community that became a cornerstone of land ownership in the South. In recent decades, the neighborhood has faced rising property values and gentrification pressures.
