California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed Assembly Bill 86, a proposal that would have required K-8 health education curriculum to include an “inclusive view of gender.” Republican lawmakers had opposed the bill, claiming it introduced controversial concepts about gender to young students. In his veto message, Newsom said the legislation should wait until a comprehensive state study of health curriculum has been completed. He argued that more data is needed before mandating changes statewide. Newsom has until the end of this week to sign or veto several other bills addressing trans or LGBTQ+ rights. In California, governors can also choose to neither sign nor veto a bill and let it become law without their signature.
