At the time, male homosexuality was still illegal in Britain, but lesbianism was not. The presenter Bryan Magee says this makes it a ā€œmuch easier subject for us to deal withā€. The secretary is incredibly open about her experience as a lesbian woman in the 1960s, stating that she just wants ā€œto love and be loved by another womanā€. She goes on to explain that the difficulty in finding a partner means that she has to ā€œkeep making friends with peopleā€, adding that ā€œif they are lesbian, there’s hope for me, but even then there isn’t hope unless they happen to take to meā€.
