Happy World Octopus Day!
Just when you think you’ve figured out life underwater, an octopus comes along to remind you who’s really in charge. Masters of disguise, problem-solving, and general mayhem, these shape-shifting cephalopods are as clever as they come. The coconut octopus, for instance, is known to build portable shelters from shells, coconut husks, bottle caps—anything it can find.
Their intellect is formidable, but none compare to the big brain(s) of the giant Pacific octopus. With about 500 million neurons located mostly in its arms, these inquisitive invertebrates can learn, solve puzzles, and strategize their way across the ocean floor. One crafty individual even tried to steal our co-founder PaulNicklen’s camera, foiled only when Paul used bubbles from his breather to distract him.
Overall, octopuses have completely flipped our understanding of animal intelligence and in doing so, have suction-cupped their way right around our hearts.
