In the soft pre-dawn light of Tuesday morning, students and Becker parents marched the couple of blocks between the library and the school, chanting and holding the posters, asking that Austin school district officials reconsider their school’s place on a list of campuses slated for closure.
Becker Elementary School is one of 13 campuses district officials said they would consider shuttering in the 2026-27 school year. Another six would transition to specialized programming.
The Austin school district released the proposed closure and attendance boundary changes Friday evening. Under the proposal, nearly one-quarter of students would change campuses.
Becker parent Barbara Passmore began tearing up as she watched her children — a fifth grader, third grader and kindergartener — clutching their poster.
“Nobody here wants to take resources away from other families that need them,” Passmore said. “It hasn’t felt like we’ve got a real clear message on why this is the necessary step.”
