A lifelong Memphian, educator, and civil rights leader, Velma Lois Jones made history as the first Black and longest-serving President of the Tennessee Education Association. She also broke ground as the first woman to lead the NAACP Memphis Branch and served in key leadership roles with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and LeMoyne-Owen College. In 2023, she was inducted into the Memphis Shelby County Schools Hall of Fame for her phenonemal contribution to education in Memphis. Ms. Jones is a distinguished community leader and noteworthy Tennessean who has served her community, state, and nation. She is an extraordinary citizen of Memphis and a consummate Tennessean, and she has won the unbridled respect and admiration of colleagues, cohorts, and community-minded people locally and nationally.
