Warped light, ancient galaxies, timeless beauty ✨
Einstein once predicted it and
@esawebb sees it in action.
These eight breathtaking examples of gravitational lensing - where massive galaxies bend and magnify the light of even more distant ones.
Each arc, ring and swirl is a snapshot of cosmic history:
– Foreground galaxies seen as they were up to 9 billion years ago.
– Background galaxies stretched from the dawn of the Universe.
– Even a rare lensing disc galaxy — a thin spiral instead of an elliptical giant.
Discovered through the COSMOS-Web Lens Survey, these images show how Webb’s sharp infrared vision helps us explore the most distant corners of the cosmos — uncovering hidden galaxies, star clusters, and even supernovae.
Because when light travels for billions of years through warped spacetime, it brings with it stories from the beginning of time.
