From liftoff to orbit — watch Europe’s newest weather and air quality satellite take flight! 🚀
At 23:04 CEST on 1 July, the Meteosat Third Generation Sounder (MTG-S1) and the very first Copernicus Sentinel-4 instrument launched into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9.
These powerful missions are now circling Earth from 36 000 km above, ready to transform how we forecast storms and track air pollution across Europe and northern Africa.
- MTG-S1 will deliver detailed 3D snapshots of the atmosphere every 30 minutes, helping meteorologists detect signs of severe weather before clouds even form.
- Sentinel-4, riding along with MTG-S1, will measure pollutants like nitrogen dioxide, ozone and sulphur dioxide every hour — offering an entirely new view of air quality from space.
The carousel shows it all: from the roar of liftoff to the confirmation of signal acquisition, marking the moment the satellite checked in from space.
