It’s hot. You know it. We know it. Even the satellites know it. 🥵 This image, captured on 29 June 2025 by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission, shows just how intense the current heatwave across parts of Europe really is. Using its Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer, the satellite reveals the actual temperature of the land surface — not the air. Unlike air temperature readings, this instrument measures the thermal energy emitted from Earth’s surface, which is usually higher than what we feel in the air. And it’s not just the land that’s heating up. The Mediterranean Sea is also unusually warm, as shown using data from the Copernicus Marine Service. The cause? A high-pressure system known as a heat dome is sitting over western Europe. It traps hot, dry air and intensifies the heat. As it shifts east, it’s drawing in even hotter air from North Africa, pushing temperatures to dangerous levels. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on those around you. Got any top tips for ...
