“With great power comes great responsibility” 🕷
This 1 August, we’re spinning a web across the cosmos to celebrate Spider Man Day with not one but two spidery spectacles.
First, meet UGC 5829 — also known as the Spider Galaxy. This irregular galaxy lies about 30 million light-years away, with twisted arms and glowing star-forming tips that bring to mind the legs of a cosmic arachnid.
Next, brace yourself for the Red Spider Nebula. Found in the constellation of Sagittarius, this dramatic nebula features waves taller than 100 billion kilometres, shaped by one of the hottest stars ever recorded. It’s chaotic, powerful, and undeniably epic.
From catalogued galaxies to cosmic crawlers, space has its own way of making an impression, just like spiderman
