Think you’ve seen the Sun? Think again. ☀️
This is the most detailed wide-angle view of our star ever captured – and it’s nothing short of spectacular.
Five years into its mission, our Solar Orbiter has delivered an ultra-crisp mosaic of the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the million-degree corona, glowing in ultraviolet light.
Swipe through to discover:
- Charged plasma dancing through messy magnetic fields
- Loops of light above sunspot-packed active regions
- Dark, cooler filaments and towering prominences
- And how 200 separate images were stitched together into this jaw-dropping solar portrait
Taken on 9 March 2025 from 77 million km away, this masterpiece was made possible by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager, developed by the Royal Observatory of Belgium, aboard Solar Orbiter – a mission of international collaboration between us and NASA.
