Happy Lunar New Year! Welcome to the Year of the Snake! 🐍
In honour of the slithering symbol of wisdom and transformation, we bring you a celestial snake of our own—the Cosmic Snake!
What you’re seeing here isn’t a trick of the eye, but a trick of gravity! This distant galaxy of the galaxy cluster MACSJ1206.2-0847, appears warped and stretched due to gravitational lensing, an effect where a massive galaxy cluster bends and magnifies the light from even more distant galaxies. This cosmic mirage lets astronomers study far-off star-forming regions in stunning detail!
Thanks to hubbleesa, we can see multiple images of the Cosmic Snake, each revealing intricate details of star formation in the early Universe. Without this gravitational magnifying glass, these distant galaxies would be too faint to observe!
As we step into the Year of the Snake, may it bring you wisdom, resilience, and cosmic wonder!
