Euclid, our dark Universe detective, has made an astonishing discovery – right in our cosmic backyard 💍
While still in its early testing phase, Euclid spotted something remarkable: a perfect Einstein Ring. This rare phenomenon, predicted by Einstein’s general theory of relativity, occurs when the light from a distant galaxy is bent around a closer galaxy, forming a striking ring.
What makes this even more extraordinary? The ring was hiding in a well-known galaxy, NGC 6505, just 590 million light-years away. Despite being studied for over a century, no one had ever seen it before. Thanks to Euclid’s advanced instruments, it has now been revealed for the first time.
This is only the beginning. Euclid will map a third of the sky, observing billions of galaxies and uncovering the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. It is expected to find 100 000 more gravitational lenses, revolutionising our understanding of the Universe.
