The cosmic dust factory in our Milky Way 🌟 Astronomers using @esawebb have uncovered a dusty cosmic marvel just 5000 light-years away in the Milky Way. Say hello to Wolf-Rayet 140, a pair of massive stars locked in a dramatic cosmic orbit — and leaving behind something extraordinary. Here’s the story: - Every 8 years, as the stars make their closest approach, their powerful stellar winds collide, compress, and create carbon-rich dust. - These dust shells expand outward at an astonishing 2600 km per second — nearly 1% the speed of light! - Webb has captured 17 shells (visible in breathtaking detail in mid-infrared light) that have lasted for more than 130 years, showing how dust forms almost in real time. Why is this important? Carbon is essential for life as we know it, and this system shows us one of the ways it spreads across the galaxy. Over time, this dust could become part of new stars, planets, and perhaps even life elsewhere. Fun fact: The Wolf-Rayet star here is 10x more...
