Explore Mercury’s secrets with BepiColombo! 🌑
On 8 January 2025, BepiColombo, our joint mission with @jaxajp, mission flew just 295 km above Mercury, capturing stunning images during its sixth and final gravity assist flyby. These snapshots offer a glimpse into the planet’s icy, fiery, and mysterious past.
1. Shadowy polar craters: Peer into Mercury’s perpetually dark, icy craters—some of the coldest places in the Solar System. Nearby volcanic plains reveal ancient lava flows from 3.7 billion years ago.
2. Sunlit northern hemisphere: View Mercury’s largest crater, the Caloris Basin, and the smooth volcanic plains shaped by lava flows and ancient impacts.
3. Volcanic explosions & bright craters: Discover Nathair Facula’s explosive volcanic history, Fonteyn Crater’s youthful brightness, and Rustaveli Crater’s magnetic mysteries.
These are BepiColombo’s final close-ups before entering orbit in late 2026. Stay tuned as we uncover more about the innermost planet!
