After joining the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (#COPUOS) last year, 🇱🇻 Latvia took another giant leap for international space governance by becoming the 116th State Party to the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, also known as the Outer Space Treaty. ⚖️ As the first international legal instrument concerning space, the Outer Space Treaty establishes conditions for peaceful and sustainable exploration of Outer Space, such as precluding the placement of nuclear weapons in orbit and guarateeing the right of every state to explore space, the Moon, and other celestial bodies. 🌟 Though the Outer Space Treaty entered into force in 1967, Latvia's accession illustrates its growing relevance as space activities evolve and raise novel questions around sustainability, space traffic, space mining and more.
