Less than 3 weeks after launch,
#MetopSGA1 is already sending back data! 📡
First signals from the on-board Microwave Sounder (MWS) & Radio Occultation Sounder (RO) are showing the satellite’s game-changing potential for weather & climate monitoring.
So, what exactly are you seeing here? 🤔
These 2 zoomed-in images may look bright & colourful, but their data is telling us a lot!
🛰️ Image 1 shows Earth’s surface & cloud patterns from the MWS. The bright red swirl in the North Atlantic is the remains of Hurricane Erin, showing Metop-SGA1's ability to track storm systems & cloud structures worldwide.
🛰️ Image 2: shows where the RO measured the atmosphere in its 1st week, in this example, showing how it captured detailed “vertical slices” of temperature in the air. By comparing these with existing forecasts, we can see how the new data will likely enhance weather forecasts, especially in places where there are few ground measurements.
