Measuring the Universe’s expansion with Webb 🌌
How fast is the Universe expanding? Astronomers worldwide are working hard to answer this question, using data from both @hubbleesa and @esawebb telescopes.
Earlier this year, Webb data confirmed previous Hubble measurements using Cepheid variables and Type Ia supernovae. Now, a new method involving gravitationally lensed supernovae is adding even more precision to these calculations!
This stunning image of galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0, captured by Webb, shows a key cosmic tool: gravitational lensing. The triply imaged supernova SN H0pe (circled) provides a new way to measure the Hubble constant, helping astronomers tackle the “Hubble Tension” — the discrepancy between expansion rates in the early and current Universe.
By studying these gravitationally lensed supernovae, Webb offers crucial insights into how fast our Universe is expanding.
