Webb is taking us on an incredible journey back in time! ⌛️ @esawebb has unveiled 10 times more supernovae in the early Universe than ever known before. These findings include the most distant exploding stars used to measure the Universe’s expansion rate. In the first three images, we see Webb’s deep space imagery with hundreds of celestial objects of various shapes, sizes, and colors. Among these, 83 of the smaller objects are circled in green. To discover the supernovae, the team compared multiple images taken up to one year apart and looked for sources that disappeared or appeared in those images. These objects that vary in observed brightness over time are called transients, and supernovae are a type of transient. In all, the team uncovered 79 supernovae in a patch of sky only about the thickness of a grain of rice held at arm’s length. These transients, or objects that change brightness over time, are the key to unveiling the Universe’s past. Prior to Webb, only a few superno...
