This #TransDayOfVisibility, we want to create space to reflect on the complex range of emotions that trans people have about TDOV. Historically, we have used this day to showcase members of our community and what visibility means to them. Like many trans people, we used TDOV as an opportunity to share photos and words that: emphasize trans joy; celebrate trans people who are living their truth in a world that is actively hostile towards them; demonstrate a wide range of gender expression; and see ourselves reflected in other trans people. We’re still doing that! However, we also want to acknowledge that choosing to be visible is immensely complicated. Trans visibility without legal rights, safety, healthcare, and other material resources places trans people in danger. It can lead to harassment and harm, especially for black and indigenous trans folx. Many trans people are already very visible in their day to day lives, whether or not they want to be.
