Community and culture filled the air as Berkeley hosted its 33rd annual Indigenous Peoples Day celebration Saturday, which included a Powwow and Indian market.
Titled “Resistance and Renewal” and hosted at the Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park, the event drew hundreds of Berkeley residents and community members to celebrate 533 years of
Indigenous resistance. The celebration featured various dances and a “prettiest shawl” contest, along with food and artwork from Indigenous vendors.
The powwow began with a grand entry at approximately 1 p.m., led by Head Woman Kiona Young and Head Man DJ Edwards. Dancers, elders and community members gathered in the center of the circle to mark the start of the celebration.
