Paul Krugman is criticizing U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over a $20 billion American aid package to Argentina, calling it a bailout for hedge funds rather than a move that serves U.S. interests.
In his latest newsletter, the Nobel Prize-winning economist said the Trump administration seems more interested in rescuing “Argentina’s version of Elon Musk,” President Javier Milei, than providing humanitarian aid. Krugman accused Bessent of using taxpayer money to protect investors, including billionaire Rob Citrone, a longtime ally who reportedly holds major stakes in Argentine assets.
He cited research suggesting the aid is artificially supporting Argentina’s peso, allowing hedge funds to unload holdings at inflated prices before another collapse. Krugman argued that there’s “no plausible scenario” in which the bailout saves Milei’s economic strategy, calling Bessent’s rationale “a hefty dose of conspiracy theory.”
