“Agave or Death!” Pelotón Mezcal
Established in 2005 as the first mezcal bar in Mexico City, Pelotón is committed to a spirit of independence and resistance, adopting their skull and crossbones logo from a famous painting of the Mexican Revolution. Their motto of “agave or death” led us to feature them for Day of the Dead this month.
This is a trio of their small batch produced in the famed mezcal town of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. Their classic “Espadin de la Muerte” (espadin of the dead) is a classic representation of agave and terroir that has spanned generations.
Maguey Criollo (wild agave) is a higher proof espadin with a complex and stronger punch.
Their “pechuga” is a rare batch produced in Mazatlán using both espadin and cupreata agaves and distilled with citric fruits, a traditional production method used in batches made especially for Day of the Dead. ☠️
