Leading up to competing I would typically describe my emotions as anxious, a bit scared, confident, and ready. Reinforced by myself or others I always feel the need to do better than my last performance, which so far that’s been an unusually linear progression. Each time I get a little more scared that I won’t live up to my expectations and I’ll finally have just a bad day.
My secret you ask? Take a breath and have fun. I try to remember what it was like at my first Worlds when there was no bar of expectation. I think of what I would tell myself then and apply it to now. I truly enjoy competing and when I’m focusing on making lifts is when I have the most fun.
Side note: The 9kg jump from 146kg to 155kg for the world record is not a strategy I recommend, however it’s now my favorite competition lift. I honestly can’t believe I did that. And I made it. Kinda impressed myself a bit there.
