Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose rebel fighters overthrew the Assad regime, wants to rebuild his country. He also says he plans to hold general elections once the needed infrastructure is rebuilt. If al-Sharaa can follow through on his promises, it would be a major development for the entire region.
